Students discover ‘We are not alone … who else is out there?’ during Geography Awareness Week
To commemorate Geography Awareness Week, which is Nov. 16-20, I want my students to gain a broader understanding of the world in which they live. I teach the Principles of Geography (GEOG 110) and World Regional Geography (GEOG 161) classes.

Each student will receive a “We are not alone” map. Students will place these maps in strategic places around the Minot State University campus and community, such as businesses, churches and meeting halls. This part of the assignment is worth 20 points.

Then, each student will randomly select a country other than the United States. They will write a 12-line poem on some aspect of the cultural geography of that country. Cultural geography refers to the morphology of the landscape, the human imprint on the landscape. This part is worth 80 points.

The top three students from selected categories will be awarded prizes.
