SBHE meeting at Minot State University Thursday
The State Board of Higher Education will meet Thursday (Nov. 19) on Minot State University’s campus. Meetings will be held in the Conference Center (Student Center, third floor) starting at 8:30 a.m. into the afternoon. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the meeting when possible. Timbrook gives November Brown Bag Book Talk
The November Brown Bag Book Talk will take place Tuesday (Nov. 17) at noon in the lower level of the Gordon B. Olson Library. Mark Timbrook, Office of Instructional Technology and adjunct history instructor, will discuss the book “Merriwether Lewis” by Thomas Danisi. The book talks are very informal, and you do not need to read the book in order to attend. Bring your lunch; we will be done in time to get to your 1 p.m. class.

Native American Awareness Week set at MSU
This week (Nov. 16-20) is Native American Awareness Week at Minot State University. All events are free and open to the public and will include:
· Monday (Nov. 16) — Opening ceremonies: Missouri Drum Group, Conference Center, 2 p.m.
· Tuesday (Nov. 17) — Guest speaker: Dominic Silliti on “Traditional Health and Wellness,” Westlie Room, 10 a.m.
· Tuesday (Nov. 17) — Guest speaker: Marilyn Youngbird on holistic traditional medicine, Westlie Room, 2 p.m.
· Wednesday (Nov. 18) — Indian Taco sale and silent auction, Old Main, 11 a.m.
· Thursday (Nov. 19) — Guest speaker: Cynthia Allery on “Diabetes in Indian Country,” Westlie Room, 11 a.m.
· Thursday (Nov. 19) — Guest speaker: Leslie Peltier, on Native American health and wellness, Westlie Room, 2 p.m.
· Thursday (Nov. 19) — NAC lecture: Greg Gagnon, associate professor of American Indian studies at the University of North Dakota, on “Why Are There Reservations? Answers to this and other common questions asked by non-Indians,” Aleshire Theater, 7 p.m.

General Information
New mini-grant competition starts
Each year, faculty from a wide range of disciplines apply for funding through Minot State University’s Small Grants program. The MSU Faculty Development and Research Committee is pleased to announce that excess funds remain after last spring’s awards. At this time, over $8,000 is available for a new mini-grant competition. The timeline is relatively short — applications are due Dec. 15; awards will be announced no later than Jan. 15, 2010. Guidelines are available at www.minotstateu.edu/rsp/small_r_grants.shtml.

Graduate School policy on incomplete grades
Graduate faculty: An incomplete grade may be requested by a student who has attended, has done satisfactory work (C or better) during the term and whose work is incomplete for reasons found to be satisfactory to the instructor. A Course Completion Agreement detailing the work to be completed and expected completion date must be signed and dated by both the student and instructor. The original copy of the agreement must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office by the grade submission deadline. A copy of the agreement should be retained by the instructor and student. A copy of the agreement should also be forwarded to the Graduate School. If a grade change is not received by the Registrar’s Office prior to the 60th calendar day following the date the original grade was due, the “I” grade will be automatically changed to the official grade as assigned! on the agreement. Extensions will only be considered due to extenuating circumstances. A full explanation in writing from the student and faculty member involved, approved by the program director and department chairperson, must be approved by the dean of the Graduate School one week prior to the completion date deadline for consideration. A new course completion agreement must accompany the extension request.
· The grade of incomplete (I) is an administrative grade that may only be entered by the Registrar’s Office with the exception of courses designated as practicum, internship, independent study, student teaching, field experience, or study abroad.
· The instructor will submit the grade earned at the time of grade posting if they choose not to sign a Course Completion Agreement, or the student does not request one.
· The instructor may complete the agreement on behalf of the student for circumstances beyond the student’s or faculty control. A summary must be attached to include the instructor communication attempts or actual communication with the student.

Parking needs for special visitors to campus
Due to a need for additional parking spots for visitors to the campus Tuesday through Saturday (Nov. 17-21), a few lots will be blocked off to accommodate them. We would encourage you to park north of the Dome or at the old AJ Automotive parking lot during the times listed below. We will be patrolling all the lots during this time and those found parking where they do not have a pass will be ticketed.
Tuesday (Nov. 17) — for a high school counselor’s workshop, we are blocking off Lot C until noon.
Thursday (Nov. 19) — for the State Board of Higher Education meeting, the visitor’s spots and unreserved spots east of the Student Center will be reserved for SBHE visitors.
Thursday through Saturday (Nov. 19-21), for the State Girls A and B Volleyball Tournaments, Lot L has been reserved for guests.
We appreciate your understanding in being displaced to accommodate extra visitors on campus. For questions, call 858-3210.

Sustainability tip of the week
The big blue bins are for office paper recycling only. Acceptable items for deposit include white paper, pastel colored paper, envelopes and junk mail.
Materials that should not be placed in blue bins include all non-office paper products including glossy or slick paper, newspaper (including inserts), fiber board (e.g. cereal boxes) and corrugated cardboard (e.g. cardboard boxes). Regular shredded paper (i.e. cut in strips) is acceptable for blue-bin recycling but cross-shredder paper (i.e. cut into flakes) is a contaminant and renders the entire bin contents unrecyclable. Newspapers and cardboard boxes (clean and collapsed) can be left beside the blue bins. Please remember that a volunteer from the MSU community must remove all unacceptable items from each bin before the contents can be sent for recycling. Your assistance is appreciated!

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has officially announced the teams and pairings for the 2009 Football Championship Series. A total of 16 teams will play at eight first-round sites on Nov. 21. Defending national champion University of Sioux Falls will face Minot State in Sioux Falls at 1 p.m. The Cougars are riding a 25-game winning streak and recently won their fourth straight Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship. Minot State is appearing in its first championship series since 2002. It earned an at-large berth and earned a share of the Dakota Athletic Conference title with Dickinson State.
Sioux Falls is making its ninth straight NAIA Championship Series appearance, which is second longest among active schools. They are the defending national champions and a three-time NAIA winner (2008, 2006 and 1996). Sioux Falls recently won its fourth straight Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship.
