North Dakota Council on the Arts Awards $571,498 in Grants Across the State
NDCA has completed its spring grant round for Fiscal Year 2011. $571,498.39 was awarded in six different grant programs: Artist in Residence, Community Arts Access, Institutional Support, Presenter Support, Teacher Incentive and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship. All applications were evaluated by grant review panels and all awards were subject to approval by the NDCA’s Board of Directors. A complete listing of the grant awards is available via this link. NDCA Announces the Addition of a Fall Presenter Support Grant Round
In order to better serve our constituents, the North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA) has added a fall grant round to the Presenter Support grant program. Previously grant applications were only accepted by April 1, for programs taking place between July 1 and June 30; now applications will also be accepted by November 1, for programs taking place between January 1 and June 30. Presenter Support is designed to benefit nonprofit organizations that are not eligible for other major grant programs through the North Dakota Council on the Arts, offers financial support for arts events and programming, and supports organizations in communities with a population of 6,000 or more. Communities with a population of under 6,000 should refer to the Community Arts Access program. North Dakota Artist, Dan Jerome, Receives $50,000 Bush Artist Fellow Award
The Bush Foundation introduced its 2010 Bush Artist Fellows June 14, 2010, at an event in Minneapolis. Each of the 15 fellows, chosen from a competitive field of more than 500 applicants, will receive a total of $50,000 in unrestricted funds and professional development support. The Bush Artist Fellowships provide strong and promising artists with resources to deepen and advance their work, to foster their careers as artists and to explore work that stimulates community dialogue. One of the largest artist grants in the Upper Midwest, it is one of only two open-application artist fellowships of this size in the United States. This year’s fellowships focused on visual arts, media arts, and traditional and functional craft arts. Dan F. Jerome (Belcourt, ND) was born and raised in Belcourt on the Turtle Mountain Reservation. He has devoted his life efforts to teaching and preserving Native culture through traditional arts and presentations throughout his professional life as an educator, administrator and the first Native American elected to the North Dakota State Senate. He was the master in the North Dakota Council on the Arts’ Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program numerous times. The United Tribes Intertribal Council of North Dakota presented him an award “for outstanding leadership and lifelong commitment in protecting and empowering the cultural lifeways of American Indian people.” He authored The Trail of Misgivings, an educational history of his reservation. Jerome joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He earned degrees from the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University. He taught in several North Dakota high schools before returning to Belcourt to become the first superintendent of schools, serving 21 years in that capacity. Executive Director Position Available with Arts North Dakota
Applications are now being accepted for an exciting new Executive Director position with Arts North Dakota, a new non-profit arts advocacy organization. This position will be approximately 20 hours/week at $16-$18/hour with no benefits. It is a statewide position and may be conducted from any location in the state. Some travel required. If you love the arts and you’re looking for a rewarding and challenging position – this could be it! 2010 NDAGA Annual Meeting “Save the Date”
This year the 2010 Annual Meeting will be held in Minot from September 19-21, 2010. NDAGA is currently making the specific arrangements and will make additional announcements as plans progress. Rooms have been reserved at the Grand International Inn in Minot for the meeting. The block will be held at the rate of $63 per night up until two weeks before the meeting, so please book no later than September 4th. This block is under “NDAGA Annual Meeting.” The Grand International is located just north of Minot State University at 1505 N. Broadway, and their phone is 852-3161.

Hall of Fame Named U.S. Cowboy Museum of the Year
The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame (NDCHF) was named North Dakota’s Tourist Attraction of the Year for 2007. Now, the Medora-based heritage center has been named the Cowboy Museum of the Year for the U.S. The award was announced by the American Cowboy Culture Awards of Lubbock, Texas. The Texas-based western cultural organization sponsors a four-day festival each September to celebrate the preservation and promotion of western heritage and culture. The Hall of Fame was picked for the 2010 Western Museum of the Year award based on its continuing work to preserve western history, culture, rodeo and the Western Trail that meanders from Brownsville, Texas, through North Dakota on its way to the Canadian border. The NDCHF intends to take a delegation to Lubbock to accept the award on September 8. NDCHF Board President Phil Baird says, “The award will be presented, along with others in connection with American Cowboy Culture Awards, during the four-day western heritage celebrations. Anyone interested in going should contact Satrom Travel and Tour of Bismarck.” Baird and Dorgan have also been asked to speak at a seminar while in Lubbock on preserving heritage and cultures. SHSND Makes $60,000 available for Restoration, Preservation of Historic Property
The State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND), through its annual appropriation of Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) money from the National Park Service, is making $60,000 available to the public for use in the restoration, stabilization, and protection of historic and archaeological properties. This money can only be used on properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places. North Dakota’s funding priority for the 2010 fiscal year is publicly-owned buildings. Applications will be reviewed by a committee from the SHSND’s Archaeology and Historic Preservation Division and rated based on four major categories: quality of the application, need for the development work, impact on the historic preservation program, and the project’s compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.All applications must be received by the SHSND by Friday, July 16, 2010. Leadership Initiative for North Dakota Nonprofits
The Impact Foundation announced a statewide capacity-building initiative that will benefit nonprofit organizations across North Dakota. Assisted by a $2 million grant from the St. Paul, MN-based Bush Foundation, the Impact Leadership Institute will provide training, education and resources to increase nonprofit efficiency, reenergize nonprofit boards, improve communication strategies, increase revenues and diversify nonprofit funding streams. Impact estimates about 800 nonprofit executives, board members and staff will be trained through this initiative. Training sessions will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and the cost is $25.00 per person. Small Employer Health Credit
The new health care reform law lets smaller nonprofits claim up to a 25 percent tax credit when they pay for at least half of the health insurance premiums for their employees. To claim the credit, the nonprofit must have 25 or fewer full time employees who earn less than $50,000 in average wages and the nonprofit must pay at least 50% of the insurance premium cost for employees. Eligible nonprofits can start claiming the credit as early as when they file their second quarter payroll tax returns. Nonprofit organization will soon be receiving a postcard from the Internal Revenue Service providing information about the small employer credit. To learn more, go to

House and Senate Arts Caucuses Grow to Record Numbers
The House Congressional Arts Caucus, co-chaired by Reps. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Todd Platts (R-PA), has recently grown in membership to 233 members of the House of Representatives, up from 176 at the beginning of this year. This body serves as the first line of defense for cultural interests when there is arts-related legislative action. This recent jump is due in large part to the work done during congressional office visits by grassroots advocates on Arts Advocacy Day, making the Arts Caucus one of the largest voluntary caucuses in the House of Representatives. The Senate Cultural Caucus has grown from 30 members one year ago to 38 members currently. Americans for the Arts’ 50 States 50 Days Initiative
Starting on Saturday, July 31 and continuing until Saturday, September 18, Americans for the Arts Action Fund will coordinate a “50 States 50 Days” initiative that supports local advocacy activities in all 50 states and in as many congressional districts as possible. Funding for Arts on Radio and Television
Funding guidelines for the Arts on Radio and Television category are now available. Through this category the Arts Endowment seeks to make the excellence and diversity of the arts widely available to the American public through nationally distributed television and radio programs. University of North Dakota Seeks Sculptor
The University of North Dakota will commission the design and creation of a bronze bust sculpture of George Walsh to be mounted outside on their campus. “Tools for Results” Tool-Kit – a Resource for Non-profit Arts and Cultural Organizations
The Texas Commission on the Arts “Tools for Results” Tool-kit was developed as a resource for non-profit arts and cultural organizations in Texas and beyond. The Tool-kit is a collaborative project made possible with the help of many organizations that generously agreed to share their resources. The Tool-kit covers six topic areas: Fundraising & Development, Programs & Exhibitions, Cultural Tourism, Marketing, Advocacy, and Nonprofit Basics. Each section covers the basics, relevant concepts, best practices, things to consider, ideas for implementing change, common mistakes, ways to get started, do’s and don’ts, and how-to’s on a variety of topics. The “tools” are the sample forms, letters, documents, checklists, templates, and other resources. The intention is for nonprofits to take these “tools” and adapt them for their own purposes.

United States Artists (USA)
USA is a new organization dedicated to the support of America’s finest living artists. Artists now have a home where they may find significant private funding to ignite the creativity that makes this country great. USA was launched in September 2005 with $20 million in seed funding provided by a coalition of leading foundations—Ford, Rockefeller, Prudential, and Rasmuson—in an act of unprecedented private investment in individual artists and the creative potential of America. Their initial investment enables them to pilot the USA Fellows program, awarding unrestricted $50,000 grants to fifty artists each year beginning in 2006. Artists’ Health Insurance Resource Center
The Artists’ Health Insurance Resource Center (AHIRC) database was created in 1998 by The Actors’ Fund of America, with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, as a health insurance resource for artists and people in the entertainment industry. Since then, with support from The Commonwealth Fund, it has expanded to include resources for the self-employed, low-income workers, the under-insured, the uninsured who require medical care and many other groups.
