issue of Prairie Business.
MEDICAL
ADVISORS
In the spring-summer 2010 issue of North Dakota Medicine, the University of North Dakota (UND) School
of Medicine and Health Sciences Advisory Council and its functions are highlighted. As the only one of its
kind in the state, the council, consisting of 17 members, actively consult with the dean of the UND School
of Medicine and Health Sciences on funding, services, and facilities to meet the health needs of North
Dakotans. Serving on the council to represent the Legislative Assembly currently are Representatives
Stacey Dahl and Ralph Metcalf and Senators Robert S. Eberle and Tim Mathern. In addition, the council
includes persons from the Department of Human Services, the State Board of Higher Education, the State
Department of Health, the North Dakota Medical Association, the North Dakota Healthcare Association, the
Department of Veterans’ Affairs Hospital in Fargo, the UND Center for Rural Health, and all four of the
medical campuses.
CAMELOT
REVISITED
State Policy Reports annually compiles its Camelot Index, which ranks the 50 states on measures of
economic vitality, health, education, crime, society, and government. In the 2010 analysis, North Dakota
ranks No. 1 in the crime-free state category, No. 2 following South Dakota in the education population
component, and No. 2 after New Hampshire in the aggregate ranking across all categories. In its index of
State Economic Momentum, State Policy Reports ranks states on their performance in personal income,
employment, and population growth. For the first quarter of 2010 (March), North Dakota holds the first
spot, reflecting the strength of the state’s natural resource development. In the last quarter of 2009, North
Dakota stood at the No. 4 ranking.
LAWMAKING:
THE GUIDE
The Legislative Council just produced an updated How a Bill Becomes Law. Known as A Guide to
Lawmaking in North Dakota, the document is available online from the legislative branch webpage at
www.legis.nd.gov/docs/pdf/bill-law.pdf.
APPROPRIATELY
TABLED
As part of the legislative wing improvement, a new table has been installed in the Harvest Room. The new
Roughrider Room table should be finished by the end of August. Both rooms will receive new sound
systems, projectors, and screens by the 2011 legislative session.
SIX-PACK
CELEBRATION
The Monday after Father’s Day, the Minot Daily News carried a story about Representative Matthew M.
Klein’s big surprise. For Father’s Day, his six daughters from across the country (along with two
granddaughters) stood on his doorstep. They had not been together since four years ago at the Kleins’
50th wedding anniversary.
